Lucern Congregational Methodist Union, MS no pastorDear Friends,
Brenda and I hope you have enjoyed a good Christmas season. We had a good Christmas this year. Brenda cooked a lot and bought too many gifts, but she loved every minute of it. We were glad our son Brad could come home for a few days. He is now back at home and work in Atlanta. We just had a simple, holiday, season. Brenda will have a couple of weeks off in January.
God is far better to us than He has to be. I am so thankful for His mercy and grace. I am glad He gives us mercy and grace, not the justice that we deserve. I keep thinking of the song that we heard a little girl sing one Christmas, "Happy Birthday Jesus" (I’m so glad you came). It is one of those catchy tunes that you cannot shake from your memory, but the truth of it rings louder than ever. Friends, I am so glad Jesus came or we would all still be in our sins.
In the Old Testament economy, sins were only rolled back and covered for another year. Sins were atoned for one year at a time and never completely forgiven and removed. But now God through the shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ, offers forgiveness, pardon and a new life in Him. I deserved hell, but now have eternal life in Jesus. Not because of my goodness, for I never had any. I had nothing to bring or offer except a ruined, rotten life of sin. Jesus sought me and found me, and saved me by His grace alone, through faith alone. I have a perfect standing as far as my position in heaven, but still live in a fallen world, with an old nature that dogs me daily. I am far from perfect, but forgiven by my precious Lord Jesus. The one who knows me best, loves me the most; bless His holy name!
As I begin writing this month, we stand on the precipice of a new year. I have to look back and thank all of you that have prayed and stood with us through the years. I am grateful to everyone who has called and invited me into your homes and churches. I appreciate God’s men, Pastors who still use evangelists, whether it be for revivals, pulpit supply, conferences or other events. I want to be used up; to wear out, not rust out. Thanks to churches and individuals who have invested in our lives, by helping us financially with love offerings, honorariums and other ways.
As you can see, most of the year, even this month of January is still open, as far as bookings. But I look forward with faith and confidence because I can look back and see what God has done. He is always the same; He is faithful. So I ask you to pray for Brenda and me as we remain faithful to this calling. I am gearing up to preach through Ecclesiastes for the January Bible Study of 2012. There is still time to call, text or email concerning any dates . . . I am always ready.
We had a good December, by starting off the month in Winston County, Mississippi. For the second time, Dr. Paul Blanchard invited me to speak at the Winston County Ministers/Wives Banquet on December 1. The banquet was hosted by Gum Branch Baptist Church, near Louisville, Mississippi. We were served a wonderful meal by the members of Gum Branch, and they do it up right. We enjoyed the meal and good fellowship with the ministers and wives, then I brought a brief message.
Our only revival was December 4-7, at Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The Pastor, Bro. Chester Carlisle, invited me preach their December revival. I have preached a December revival for Bro. Chester in Florida a few years ago. December revivals are a very effective way to end the church year. It seems at the end of every year, God gives us a great meeting. This was the case at Grace Baptist. God blessed, folks were saved and lives were changed. Prayer altars were full and we heard tearful testimonies. We had some of the best music in a while. Simply put, God came down in power and glory. Grace’s Minister of Music, Tim Moore, invited Tanya Kilpatrick from Longino Baptist Church, (in Philadelphia), to lead our revival music. She did a great job with her solos and the choir was exceptional too. There was a sweet spirit and a packed house almost every service.
This was our first trip to Grace Baptist, and I saw a lot of folks I knew, some dating back to my high school days. It was a very special week of revival meeting and I will remember it for a long time. I have been with Bro. Chester in three of the churches he has served, and it sure was good to be with him and his wife, Cathy again. It is encouraging when you can go back to churches for repeat meetings.
The second week of December was at our church at Edinburg. The First Baptist Church of Edinburg, has been very kind to us through these years of evangelism. As I mentioned, we have been members there since July, 2004. Brenda was sick and unable to go with me on December 11. I preached both services, and the Lord gave us a good day.
Then on Monday night, December 12th, we traveled to Woodland Hills Baptist Church, in Jackson, Mississippi. Pastor Ty Pigott honored us by inviting Brenda and me to sing for their annual Deacon/Wives Christmas Banquet. This is a very big affair at Woodland Hills each December. The fellowship hall was beautifully decorated, depicting the Christmas season. Brenda and I were both recovering from colds, allergies and sinus problems. Our voices were not up to par, but the Lord helped us sing for the banquet. Woodland Hills is always very cordial to us and we enjoyed being with Bro. Ty and Daphne again. It was a good night.
The last two Sundays of December were unfilled, and we attended our church again on those days. In between, I preached for Bro. Chris Wells at Hazel Baptist Church, Lake, Mississippi, on a Wednesday night. Bro. Chris was ill and needed a break. It was good to see our church family at Hazel Baptist Church again.
On December 18th, our pastor’s wife, Willetta Henry, led our choir in presenting a great Christmas cantata. A lot of hard work goes into these services, and it turned out great. On Christmas day, God used our pastor, Bro. Billy Henry, in a powerful way. We heard one of the best Christmas messages we have ever heard. It was entitled, "Christmas Is", from the "fullness of time" passage in Galatians 4. For such a cold, rainy morning, our little church was almost packed out.
And so as I get ready to close, we look with trust and faith in our great God. I ask all of you to intercede for us as we head into 2012. I would like to preach somewhere every Sunday of the new year. I am already getting calls and e-mails, and I hope pastors will continue to book early, in order to get the exact dates they need. My website Schedules are always up to date, and you will find phone numbers and an e-mail link on the page.
We sure do love you folks and thank you for your interest and prayers across the years. We pray for all of you every day, and thank God to be able to call you our friends in ministry. As you can see most of the year, most of January is still open and available. I am ready, excited and looking with anticipation of what our Lord will do. The Lord willing, this is where we will be in January 2012 . . .1 New Pleasantdale B.C. Philadelphia, MS Tommy Miles, Pastor
